The face behind the name…

From starting Sugplumb in 2008 to helping homeowners, community groups, and businesses across the North East of Scotland, we sat down with Stuart Sugden to talk about his journey, the business, and everything in between.

What first got you into the plumbing and heating industry?

I’ve always enjoyed practical, hands-on work and problem-solving, so the plumbing and heating industry felt like a natural fit for me. I started out learning the trade and quickly realised how rewarding it is to help people improve the comfort and efficiency of their homes. Over the years, that interest developed into a real passion for the industry, particularly as technology and renewable heating systems have continued to evolve.

Did you always see yourself running a business, or did that come later?

Running a business definitely came later. In the beginning, my focus was on learning the trade and gaining as much experience as possible. As time went on, I saw an opportunity to build a company centred around quality workmanship, honesty, and excellent customer service. That’s really how Sugplumb developed, from a desire to do things properly and build long-term trust with customers.

What does a typical day look like for you as Managing Director?

No two days are ever the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role. A typical day can involve overseeing projects, supporting the team, meeting with customers, discussing renewable energy solutions, planning for future growth, and ensuring everything behind the scenes runs smoothly. It’s a varied role that combines technical, operational, and customer-focused responsibilities.

Sugplumb avoids a ‘sales-driven approach’. Why is that important to you?

For us, it’s about doing what’s right for the customer rather than simply trying to sell a product. Every home and every customer is different, and we believe people value honest advice and realistic expectations. We’d much rather build trust and long-term relationships than pressure someone into a solution that may not be the right fit for them.

What do customers misunderstand most about renewable heating systems?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that renewable heating systems don’t perform as well as traditional systems, particularly in older properties or during colder weather. In reality, when systems are designed and installed correctly, they can be incredibly effective, efficient, and comfortable. A large part of our role is educating customers on how the technology works and helping them understand what’s involved.

What are the biggest barriers stopping homeowners and businesses from switching to renewables?

The main barriers are usually the upfront cost, uncertainty, and misinformation. Renewable systems are a long-term investment, and many homeowners and businesses can feel overwhelmed by conflicting information online. That’s why good advice and proper system design are so important, helping customers understand the long-term benefits, running costs, and environmental impact of the technology. There is also still a lack of awareness around the grants and interest-free loan options available, which can make renewable heating far more accessible and affordable for both homeowners and businesses. Once customers understand the support that’s available and how much they could potentially save over time, they often feel much more confident about making the switch.

Do you see a future where people move away from traditional heating systems and become fully renewable?

I do think we’re moving in that direction, although it will take time. Technology is improving rapidly, and awareness around energy efficiency and sustainability continues to grow. Traditional heating systems will still have a place for some time yet, but renewable heating will become increasingly common as confidence in the technology grows and the infrastructure continues to improve.

What’s been the most memorable project Sugplumb has worked on?

There have been several standout projects over the years, particularly complex renewable installations in older or more challenging properties. One especially memorable project involved heating an uninsulated church, which required us to design and install an underfloor heating system powered by four heat pumps. We also added solar panels and batteries to help power the building and offset running costs. Seeing a technically challenging project come together successfully, and knowing the customer is delighted with the result, is always incredibly rewarding. Those are the types of projects that really showcase the experience, skill, and dedication of the entire team.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Probably to never cut corners and always focus on quality. A reputation takes years to build and only moments to damage. That advice has stayed with me throughout my career and is something we try to reflect in every aspect of Sugplumb.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Outside of work, I enjoy being involved in hillclimb car racing. I’ve always had a strong interest in motorsport, and it’s a great way to switch off and take on a completely different challenge outside of work. I enjoy the technical side of it just as much as the competition itself.
